Rising in timeless stone layers against steep sheep-mown hillsides, mysterious Xinaliq (2350m) is, by some definitions, Europe's highest village. Swirling cloudscapes and matchless views add to an atmospheric sense of discovery in a settlement that has somehow maintained its own distinct language and centuries of tradition. Within the village, little is set up for tourists but we'll show you around the rocky alleys that pass for streets, helping you to distinguish the mosque and museum from the other sturdy stone buildings that climb almost geologically up to the village apex with its unforgettable sweeping views. As with many of our regional tours, a big added bonus is the journey. After an hour or so approximately paralleling the Caspian coast, we'll make a quick roadside stop for photos of the abrupt, mystical peak of Besh Barmaq topped by giant fingers of rock that some consider having spiritual powers. We then drive through the historic city of Guba with its distinctive mosques, quaint brick houses, and dramatic 'Genocide' memorial. After a refreshing break, we continue along a glorious lane that winds through beautiful forests, cuts through two spectacular canyons and emerges at the idyllic Chaigoshan picnic spot before crossing a pair of windswept passes. Don't forget your camera!
